Biography:

Troubled by the frequent sight of children playing in the streets or idly passing time, Harold began the Church Athletic League with the belief that the physical side of a young person’s development meant little if the spiritual side was neglected.

A hockey league began in 1951, offering the opportunity to play to boys who attended church or Sunday school 80 per cent of the time. From 100 players in its first season, the league grew to include more than a thousand young people each year, and added bowling, basketball, softball and ringette to its program.

Harold was named Kingston’s Man of the Year in 1955.

An arena in his name stands in Portsmouth. His efforts will forever remain as a symbol of vision and leadership.
