Biography:
A life long resident of Kingston, Corrie Abrams has shown a passion for local sports and volunteerism that has spanned more than three decades. That passion started with her association with Junior Hockey, and her column Corrie’s Corner that took us behind the scenes with area hockey teams by shining a light on players and organizers making up those franchises.
Her desire to contribute to local sports grew along with her journalistic endeavours. Corrie had a long affiliation with junior hockey teams in Amherstview, Napanee, Gananoque and Picton, as well as with the Kingston Voyageurs. She was a statistician, and the first female convenor with the Empire B Junior C league, and also served as the Chair of Public Relations for the Greater Kingston AAA Hockey, as well as being a founding member of the organization.
While junior hockey may have been Corrie’s passion, her sense of community was not limited to that sport alone. She volunteered with Kiwanis for 25 years , serving on the nominating committee for the Kiwanis Amateur Athlete Awards , and coordinating that event many times. Corrie volunteered for 24 years as a Board member and as President of the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame, chairing the selection committee for several years during that time.
She has been recognized by the OHA in 2005 for promoting hockey and again in 2018 with a Crystal Puck Award recognizing individuals for outstanding contributions to the association, and in 2024 was the recipient of a King Charles III Coronation Medal for outstanding commitment to public service and dedication to our community.
Commitment, dedication, generosity, enthusiasm, and passion are all adjectives used to describe what Corrie Abrams has done in her lifelong love of her community sports history. That passion has also transferred into her volunteer work with Rideaucrest, the Kingston Gospel Temple and Lionhearts.
