John A. D. McFarlane

Biography:

John was a fine tennis player as demonstrated by his three Ontario championships, nine Kingston Tennis Club titles, five Jack Campbell Invitational Tennis Tournament championships, eight club championships at The Landings and an Ontario Mixed Doubles championship with his wife, Joan.

John's coaching career, beginning in 1971 at RMC, includes coaching Queen's Men's and Women's teams for 21 years, the 1973 York University Collegiate Team, the Canadian National junior team for three years and the Team Ontario junior team from 1990 to 1994. At Queen's his Women's Teams won one National and six Provincial championships and his Men's Teams captured two Provincial titles. Kingston players he has coached have won 21 Canadian National Singles or Doubles championships: six received Division 1 scholarships in the U.S.

He has coached internationally, directed over 100 instructor certification clinics, written a provincial tennis manual to assist coaches, introduced tennis to over 5,000 youngsters through the Junior Tennis Development Program, and conducted over 90 Ontario Tennis Association Tournaments in Kingston.

John has been Technical Director for the Ontario Tennis Association, the Chair of Queen's Athletics and Recreation (the only native Kingstonian to have held this position) and has served on several provincial and community committees
